1 Giant Leap

1 giant leap recording 1 giant leap

I watched and fell in love with 1 Giant Leap 9 years ago.   It has now reappeared and been mentioned more collectively in the last month then all the years combined! What makes that extra special is the fact that 99.9% of you have probably never even heard of it let alone seen it, especially if you’re based in the US. If you’re cool enough to live in the UK then it’s a different story :)

Below is one of my favorite songs off the soundtrack.

Here’s a real simple if then for yah:

If you Love music, then WATCH 1 Giant Leap

ABOUT 1 Giant Leap

1 Giant Leap is a concept band and media project consisting of the two principal artists, Jamie Catto (Faithless founding member) and Duncan Bridgeman.

Based in the UK, the two musicians set out to create a multimedia project that would encompass a CD, DVD and cinematic presentation that would offer a complete artistic statement. The project offers music, digital video footage shot over the course of six months by Catto and Bridgeman, images, rhythms and spoken word content.

The band was signed to the Palm record label and its eponymous CD was released on 9 April 2002. It features contributions from Dennis Hopper, Kurt Vonnegut, Michael Stipe, Robbie Williams, Eddi Reader, Tom Robbins, Brian Eno, Baaba Maal, Speech, Asha Bhosle, Neneh Cherry, Anita Roddick,Michael Franti, Zap Mama, and other artists and authors. The band’s theme for the project is “Unity Through Diversity”. A Making Of was also shown on the Discovery channel, which featured some of the effort involved in finding and working with the musicians and other people involved in the project.

1 Giant Leap’s “My Culture” video for their first top ten single, featuring Robbie Williams and Maxi Jazz from Faithless received extensive airplay.

In 2004 they moved onto to a deal with Simon Fuller and 19 Entertainment to make a second film and album entitled What About Me? The concept was the same as their initial CD and DVD – traveling the world interviewing artists and sampling music – though the second time around their journey was longer (four years) and doubling the number of contributing artists from their debut release.

George Watsky is a writer and performer who believes in the equal power of the tear and the belly laugh. Born and raised in San Francisco and now based in Los Angeles, Watsky aims to cross-pollinate the stage, screen and stereo with work that speaks to both the humor and frustrations of modern life.

Watsky was featured on Season 6 of Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry on HBO. He was the 2006 Youth Speaks Grand Slam Poetry Champion, 2006 Brave New Voices International Poetry Slam Champion, and performed in a record six consecutive Youth Speaks Grand Slam Finals. The last three of those audiences, all topping out at over 3,000, were the largest ever for poetry slams anywhere in the world. In 2009 Watsky was one of three poets who performed live on FOX at the NAACP Image Awards in honor of Russell Simmons’ lifetime achievement award.

genius speaks.

spoken word, poetry, philosophy call it what you will … when it’s good it’s good. It’s like music – doesn’t matter the genre a good song is a good song. I’m a pretty picky person and very leery when ‘friends’ ask me to listen or see their art cause I’m about the worst critic ever. I usually have no explanation I either feel it or I don’t. If I don’t, I’m a real shitty liar and it can be uncomfortable trying to find good things to say about something you don’t necessarily like. Like, ‘oh that shade of red is dark’ … yah know you just start stating facts, ‘the recording quality was real good’.

The one art that by far I’m the most critical on is spoken word. Saul Williams knocked my socks off when I was about 19 and I’ve never been the same. So, when a couple years ago Babe and I met a new friend Doug who invited us to go see him at a poetry slam I looked at Babe and shook my head NOooooo. Babe’s is much better at not showing his dislike, me … I’m horrible my face does wierd exaggerated shit that I can’t control. Like ouch you are hurting me with your ‘art’ please make it stop!

Babe went to and recorded the event, when he got home he kinda looked like he was in shock. “He’s good! Really good!” Babe played the video for me and I was absolutely blown away. Doug is not like anyone else, Doug is unapologetically Doug and looks to impress no one but himself. Which in my eyes is the most fantastic way to be!

He rarely does video and the ‘Disgruntled Chicken’ is still in edit … and I love him but he sucks online and doesn’t even have a website for me to send you to. So, when this came in my inbox yesterday it was like an early Christmas present and I feel so honored to be able to share it with you. With Doug there is no stage or lights needed just the right moment … this moment is while he’s doing the finishing touches on the baby’s room that’s set to arrive next week!

>> After you play it go to the YouTube page and leave a comment good or bad he’ll like them both!

The Disgruntled Chicken – Production Stills

New Photos_4816.JPG

Here’s the first look at the Disgruntled Chicken – a short film featuring Douglas Rodgers (disgruntled chicken) and directed by Babe Baker of Big and Fancy Productions.  Doug is one of the great emerging spoken word artist of our generation.  His disgruntled creativity was fueled when working at a small restaurant where part of his job description included dancing on the side of the road in a chicken suit.  The Disgruntled Chicken was produced on a budget of less then $20 in one day down in Asheville’s River District.  The day of filming was about 90 degrees and 100% humidity, most of the shoot required Doug to drink and smoke throughout the day and sweat it out in the suit.  By the end of the day a disgruntled, dehydrated sick chicken remained.  The film is set to release online early 2010!

After the extremely hot shoot we celebrated with refreshing swim in a waterfall.  Below is the softer side of the disgruntled chicken with his lovely girlfriend Sarah at Skinny Dip Falls off of the Blueridge Parkway.
