spoken word, poetry, philosophy call it what you will … when it’s good it’s good. It’s like music – doesn’t matter the genre a good song is a good song. I’m a pretty picky person and very leery when ‘friends’ ask me to listen or see their art cause I’m about the worst critic ever. I usually have no explanation I either feel it or I don’t. If I don’t, I’m a real shitty liar and it can be uncomfortable trying to find good things to say about something you don’t necessarily like. Like, ‘oh that shade of red is dark’ … yah know you just start stating facts, ‘the recording quality was real good’.
The one art that by far I’m the most critical on is spoken word. Saul Williams knocked my socks off when I was about 19 and I’ve never been the same. So, when a couple years ago Babe and I met a new friend Doug who invited us to go see him at a poetry slam I looked at Babe and shook my head NOooooo. Babe’s is much better at not showing his dislike, me … I’m horrible my face does wierd exaggerated shit that I can’t control. Like ouch you are hurting me with your ‘art’ please make it stop!
Babe went to and recorded the event, when he got home he kinda looked like he was in shock. “He’s good! Really good!” Babe played the video for me and I was absolutely blown away. Doug is not like anyone else, Doug is unapologetically Doug and looks to impress no one but himself. Which in my eyes is the most fantastic way to be!
He rarely does video and the ‘Disgruntled Chicken’ is still in edit … and I love him but he sucks online and doesn’t even have a website for me to send you to. So, when this came in my inbox yesterday it was like an early Christmas present and I feel so honored to be able to share it with you. With Doug there is no stage or lights needed just the right moment … this moment is while he’s doing the finishing touches on the baby’s room that’s set to arrive next week!
>> After you play it go to the YouTube page and leave a comment good or bad he’ll like them both!
